Stewards of God’s good creation

Bloggers Unite - Blog Action Day

One of my tribes — Evangelical Christians — has been pretty notorious (along with the rest of humankind!) for not caring for the environment. For some reason Christians have been slow to see creation care as a moral issue. The argument sometimes goes along the lines that human life is more important than the rest of creation and thus our time and resources should be devoted to protecting the sanctity of human life. I agree, because we Christians should devote radical amounts of creativity and energy and resources to spreading the truth of the damage and shame of abortion, while at the same time being the forerunners towards upholding (and embodying!) moral standards in our communities and nation. It is not either-or, or at least should not be.

I strongly believe creation care it is a moral issue, and will the first to confess I have not long nor well cared for God’s good creation.

The 19th century saw the industrialization of most of the globe while at the same time devising new and creative ways for us humans to spread the impact of our depravity through damaged consumerism. No generation can destroy creation as quickly and effectively as ours. We have that many people now, that high of a standard of living, and that little regard for our consciences when destroying God’s creation. It is pride, it is selfishness, it is dead wrong. It does not please God.

My advice? Start with something small (recycling and buying more local products) and endeavor to get better each day. Change your mind (see articles at restoringeden.org) about creation care as a faithful steward under our Creator, and do your part.

  • What is deTheos?

The two Greek words de ("but") and Theos ("God") are the first two words of Ephesians 2:4: "But God, who is rich in mercy..." Because of God's great love and grace extending to us in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, redeemed and able to know, love + enjoy God more fully, ever-increasing and forever.
This site contains the thoughts and conclusions and journeys of the Patterson family -- Jeff, Kari and Dutch -- who have experienced the front-end of God's amazing grace, and continue to delight in His unfailing love.
