Theology Proper: God’s Perfections
God’s Perfections
God has revealed His nature to us in nature, His written word, and most expressly in the incarnation of the Son, Jesus, the perfection revelation of God in human form (Hebrews 1:1-4; Colossians 1:15-17). Each attribute[1] God possesses is not a portion of His character but rather is evidence of His total being. All three Persons within the Godhead possess each attribute perfectly, completely and equally, thus they are rightly called God’s ‘perfections.’[2] These perfections may be categorized as either natural or moral, although neither list is exhaustive, and there is overlap since each describes His total being.
[1] Attribute = a quality or characteristic inherent in or ascribed to someone or something
[2] Perfection = the state of being without a flaw or defect
