The Self-Sustaining Creator
Self-sufficient
God has need of no-thing, for He is separate from all things. Since He has no needs, nothing can add to or take away from Him. He is self-dependent, not dependent upon anything else. He is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe (Rev. 4:11) but does not need to be sustained, since He has life in Himself (John 5:26). As He has no needs, He can out of infinite abundance supply the needs of all creation. He can be given no thing; nothing adds to His being. In creation, nothing is complete in itself, but requires something outside itself in order to exist: God. Yet He needs nothing to exist.
Creator
God is revealed as the Creator of all things from the very first verse of Scripture (Gen. 1:1ff). The Father, Son and Spirit each are revealed as co-creators, revealing the infinite creativity and joy God possesses in making things and causing their being. God’s relation to His creation as Creator marks His initial, continual and sustaining involvement in its ongoing existence – He loves creation and seeks its best and all things display His worth and beauty.
