Oh, what a happy tension. Clearly, my impact for Christ is not limited to my finite ability nor imperfect obedience.
“What then is Apollos? What is Paul? Servants through whom you believed, as the Lord assigned to each. I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the growth. So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. ” (1 Cor. 3:5-7)
Fruitful from who’s perspective?
I know that the idea of faithful always equals successful, even when you fail miserably. I would rather be an utter failure in the eyes of everyone else and be considered faithful by God. In the same way, I may never be seen as fruitful to anyone or even myself, but God sees me as abundantly so.
Zach,
Good point. My contention is that no matter the measure of fruitfulness (from our silly perspective, or from God’s perfect one), the effect of our lives for good is disproportionate to our own faithfulness. Perhaps the only way they can be seen to be equal is that God’s fruitfulness is totally in keeping with His faithfulness (to, in and through us), all from His unique (tri-) perspective. Still need to think deeper on how to articulate this (thus the short post, but longer comment!?). Am I way off here?
