Adam Poole, friend, pastor and now seminary graduate

May 16th, 2008 Jeff

This morning Kari and I were able to attend the Baccalaureate Chapel at Multnomah Biblical Seminary to honor our fellow students who have finished their studies and reached graduation. Congratulations to all Multnomah graduates! Tonight they will get their diplomas; this morning some of the seminary students received aways.

Adam + Jeff One fellow student, a dear friend of ours, Adam Poole received the John G. Mitchell Award, given to the student who best embodies the grace and truth of the gospel (the specific description was a bit longer). While none of us ‘deserves’ anything, Adam is about as close as you can get to deserving recognition. Lets give honor where honor is due.

Adam has labored for three-and-a-half years towards earning an MDiv, all while serving full-time as director, teacher and pastor in Corvallis with Cornerstone School of Ministry . The real hero behind the man is Grace, the embodiment of her name who works tirelessly raising their four boys. (Funny story is that Kari and Grace were very close friends in college while Adam and I hardly knew each other, and conversed only sparingly. Only in the last 3 years of seminary, even while Kari and I no longer live in Corvallis, Adam and I have come to be extremely close friends — "of one soul," like Paul said of Timothy in Phil. 2:20.)

Theirs has not been an easy journey. More importantly, their marriage is a continual example of reciprocal love, being faithful and true to one another, and available to their kids, leading them well.

Congratulations Adam and Grace . Our prayers are with you. May God’s sweet grace shine brightly on you this Summer and provide opportunities to display the beauty of Jesus in all things.

Our Big Town Heroes

March 4th, 2008 Jeff

Big Town HeroWe want welcome our dear friends, the Seifers, back to Oregon, as they set up shop (literally) down in Corvallis. They have recently acquired the Big Town Hero sub sandwich shop across from the OSU campus on Monroe St.

Sunday we ventured down to help them clean up the restaurant and get ready for their grand opening, Monday morning. Wish we could have been there to order the first sandwich. (Read Kari’s reflections on the day.)

If you are in Corvallis or stopping by, drop in at 2043 NW Monroe Avenue for a great sub sandwich. Tell Aaron you read about them here.

Celebrating the union of Joe + Amanda

November 8th, 2007 Jeff

Last weekend we headed to California for a wedding and stopped off at my Dad’s to be with him or a couple of days. Then we proceeded to drive south to Santa Barbara for the the wedding of Mr. & Dr. Joe & Amanda Munk. Joe was my roommate from 2001-03 and a close friend in Christ. One of those loyal and candid and authentic and zealous friends God blesses a man with. I love him as my own soul. (Amanda is a dear family friend of ours, and I must say that Joe followed the good advice of marrying up!)

Kari has written some reflections on our trip, and specifically about Joe & Amanda and their wedding day.

Congrats to Celso + Tatiana

October 27th, 2007 Jeff

{Celso + Tatiana}Today my good Brazilian friend Celso Nascimento will wed his bride Tatiana in Sao Vicente, Brazil (Brasil). It would be difficult to find a more godly man than Celso and he certainly has waited for God’s perfect choice for his bride.

I first met Celso while on a short-term missions trip in Sāo Vicente in 2002, and we quickly became friends. At that time he was a new assistant pastor to an American missionary-church planter and being raised up to be the native pastor of a new church there (Capela do Calvário de Sāo Vicente). In our outreach on the streets in the slums he was my translator, although I quickly learned he possessed better unique skills in communicating the Gospel and God’s Word that I did. And to see him at work in loving people — I was the one being ministered to. So I sought every opportunity to let him loose to speak and teach and encourage him in those short two weeks. A year later I was back in Brasil, this time in Curitiba, and we again formed a team. Email has kept us in constant contact since then, and he remains a close friend and near the top of my prayer list. His humility, love for people and sensitivity in communicating are only a few of his special qualities. Celso is a man of deep Christ-like character, and I thoroughly enjoy reading his monthly newsletters and stories of faith and humility and God’s power at work. {Read more about Celso here}

Here’s to all God’s best as they begin their life journey together. Wish we could be there to celebrate with them.

Facebook

October 13th, 2007 Jeff

About 3 weeks ago I signed up for Facebook, initially for the ability to advertise an event at Multnomah, our InterSeven night of prayer on campus there. While it has been good to connect with a few friends I’d lost touch with, it seems that checking one’s Facebook account could consume quite a bit of time. I am railing against that tendency, which of couse means I am quite slow to respond to pokes and wall posts and emails in Facebook.

Jeremy + Mari Lyn

August 13th, 2007 Jeff

Last night we arrived home from a long weekend in Bellevue, site of the wedding of Jeremy & Mari Lyn (Petrick) Stewart. What an incredible time, reconnecting with friends and witnessing the beginning of Jeremy & Mari Lyn’s journey as husband and wife.

Jeremy is one of those rare friends who embodies the qualities we admire most: he’s humble, authentic, unselfish, has a listening ear, a wise mind, and is adept at seeing into the hearts and lives of others. Couple that with his considerable hoops skills and we became friends for life when we met for the first time back in ‘99 at OSU. It was a privilege to be one of Jeremy’s groomsmen, alongside my brother-in-law Kris Zyp. (In fact, each of us had the other two as groomsmen in our wedding.)

Here’s a pic at the reception on Lake Washington:

  • What is deTheos?

The two Greek words de ("but") and Theos ("God") are the first two words of Ephesians 2:4: "But God, who is rich in mercy..." Because of God's great love and grace extending to us in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven, redeemed and able to know, love + enjoy God more fully, ever-increasing and forever.
This site contains the thoughts and conclusions and journeys of the Patterson family -- Jeff, Kari and Dutch -- who have experienced the front-end of God's amazing grace, and continue to delight in His unfailing love.
