Religion v. Gospel

We must not think of the Gospel as merely our ticket to Heaven. We must see it is all of life, as in living out the Gospel, and seeing everything through the Gospel. Darrin Patrick and The Journey Church, have provided the following, in the model of Tim Keller (download as PDF): [TABLE=2] SHARETHIS.addEntry({ title: "Religion v. Gospel", url: "http://www.deTheos.com/2007/08/06/religion-v-gospel/" });

Gospel-saturated thoughts

Gospel-saturated thoughts Kari and I have been talking quite a bit lately on the need for us Christians to live with a Gospel-saturated mindset. That is, the Gospel (the Good News of salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ) is not just a message for entering the Christian life. It is the principle we must continue to live by in all of life. Jesus is not just our ticket to God. When we believe the Gospel, we get God. He is the Gospel! This need to always keep the Gospel front and center in our minds is key to the Apostle Paul’s instructions concerning the life in Jesus: Colossians 2:6-7 6...

Seeing with childlike eyes of faith

A child sees his father as the greatest and strongest of all human beings. He sees the veracity and wit and wise decision-making in action and thinks, “I want to be like my Daddy.” Well, at least I hope that is how Dutch sees me, his Daddy. But it is also more than casual observation and wishful thinking, for a true son with an honorable dad will grow to trust his hero. This was seen in our family last weekend as Dutch went for his first swim — and didn’t even blink at the danger involved. He knows no fear (yet) and has grown to think and know that his parents are to be trusted. He has...

Mortification of sin

Justin Taylor wrote this article for the Gospel Coalition: John Owen on the Mortification of Sin (Justin Taylor, May 2007) Do you mortify; do you make it your daily work; be always at it while you live; cease not a day from this work; be killing sin or it will be killing you. Drawn by the Blurbs The old saying “You can’t judge a book by its cover” is patently false—or at least that’s what graphic designers tell me! While good covers draw me in, I quickly turn to the back of the book to read the beloved blurbs. What are my respected leaders and mentors-from-a-distance saying about this...

Why receive Jesus?

Why receive Jesus? There is a striking lack of depth among us professing Evangelical Christians. I say that in terms at. I often remind our students at CSOM that it is a shame to treat Jesus as if He were merely the conductor or ticketmaster of the train to Heaven. “Do you have your ticket?” is the question so many ask in our churches and in sharing the gospel. “Wanna go to Heaven?” So we consider people as “saved” if they simply repeat a prayer with no heart-felt reality and not desiring to truly hand over their life to their Creator. Sad reality. Yes, Jesus is Deliverer, Forgiver,...
