When Daddy Day = Mommy Day

Less than an hour ago Kari left the driveway, headed for class. She has a seminary course on spiritual life and counseling for families all morning, a meeting with her mentor in the early afternoon, and an internship session with a select small group of other faithful women students later in the afternoon. Because she is so thoughtful and wise, she’ll likely run a perfectly-planned string of errands as to not waste a penny or a quarter-mile of fuel in the car.

I’m home holding down the fort in usually Monday fashion, which has come to be known as “Daddy Day.” I love it; and so does Kari. I get to go for a bike ride with Dutch on the seat behind me, and run around the playground equipment with him. When the Oregon Rain Fest comes soon, we’ll have to get more creative, and put on Dutch’s new discount rubber rain boots. This is a whole day for us boys to bond all the more.

I guess one could say this is Mommy Day for her, too. Kari gets a break from the continual demands of mommyhood and can sort of spread her wings for a day. (She also gets some extended time to think about Heidi, in her tummy, and talk to and pray for her.) I hope her day is as special as our will be here at home. She deserves it.

Wear some orange

Dutch and I sported some OSU colors last night as the Beavers knocked off the mighty #1 USC Trojans (27-21).

Fabric store adventures

Last night we ventured over to Joann’s Fabric Store to take advantage of the Fall sale on, uh, fabrics.

Heidi was along for the ride of course, but can’t yet see what mommy chose for her curtains, crib and cradle. Nice selections, Kari!

What was Dutch doing all this time?

He was running around the fabric store looking for just the right pattern for his little sister!

Caught in the rain

Yesterday Kari and Dutch ventured out to the nearby school for some fun on the playground. They took the jogging stroller, and planned to be gone a half hour or so. I was at home with two Multnomah students hammering away at our Greek translation assignment.

Then the rain hit. And it was coming down hard.

Caught in the rainI looked at one of my classmates — “I probably should go get them, huh?” He smiled back, I grabbed the phone, and then hit the road in the car.

Kari and Dutch  were soaked, but trying to stay dry on a covered place. Because the stroller doesn’t fit in the trunk, I ran it back home, and they drove. Now we were all soaked. Dutch loved every moment of it, and was waving at me as I ran outside in the rain.

It seemed like it rained a whole inch in just an hour. The first real rain of the Fall — and on the first day of the season. Welcome to Oregon!

A weekend apart

Kari is away teaching/preaching a women’s retreat this weekend. Dutch and I are having some fun as boys and best friends.

More videos to come of our adventures over the last week.

Monday was Daddy Day

Dutch had three meals with me yesterday.

  1. Breakfast (oatmeal)
  2. Lunch #1 (shared large fries at Burgerville, after long bike ride)
  3. Lunch #2 (leftover spaghetti Mommy had prepared, right after lunch #1)

3 meals with Daddy

(We had dinner too, later, after naptime, but Daddy Day was over by then; at least we were no longer alone and able to be our mischievious selves.)

Real Simple Son

Dutch + Mommy reading Real SimpleDutch, apparently with a mind to better organize our home, awoke from his nap and attended to his usual custom: he picked a book to read with Mommy.

His chosen book today? Real Simple: The Organized Home!

Hearing our Baby

This morning at a baby checkup we were able to hear the heartbeat of our baby.

Dutch was a little rambunctious, so I (Jeff) went and played with him in the lobby, but not until hearing this …

Woohoo!

(Gets louder at about 16 seconds.)
