Yesterday I stayed home in the morning to wake up with Dutch and read and play with him, knowing that I wouldn’t see him at the end of the day as had high school group.

At dinner time I sent a text message to Kari: “Tell Dutch daddy loves him.” She said that when Dutch heard the phone beep he said “Dada.” Then they took this picture — Dutch folding his hands in his “I love you” sign. Makes a father’s heart melt.

dump & truck (those two as completely separate, in different contexts)
water (”wahwah”)
“dump it” (referring to water)

car (Bostonian accent and all, “cah”)

Papa
and today he spontaneously said “Bible” (clear as day, over and over!)

Yeah, I guess there are mixed metaphors here. Story or Journey, which one?. Yes. Both. Here’s a few thoughts on the journey up until now, in mostly story form…

Kari recently wrote about the story of how our new adventure came together (first part | second part).

Before that I had some reflections on some mileposts in my life on the trajectory of becoming a pastor. Then a list of a half dozen themes that have come out of this last chapter (the past 50 months).

God is so good, especially for bringing us disappointments.

Saving daylight

On the last morning before Daylight Savings begins, Dutch and I went for a jog. He enjoyed the pile of fallen leaves on his lap, and answered all my quiz questions correctly, like, Where’s the orange tree? How about the green tree? Dutch, where is the fire engine?

We ventured outside into the sunshine today, to the park in town, so we could load up Dutch’s Jeep with as much bark dust as possible.

Muddy boy

Yesterday while out on some errands, Dutch stopped to play in the grass with one of his toy trucks. The mud was magnetic and he hopped on over to enjoy it. Fun times for our little muddy boy. (The trip was of course cut a little short and we hosed out the car later.)

Dutch finds a pocket

Tonight we cracked open an oldie and goodie, Corduroy Gets A Pocket, the front inscription from Jeff’s mom to him on Christmas 1985. I remember reading that book over and over, and it surprisingly made it 25 years with not much wear. Dutch jumped into this particular story for the first time and was his super cuddly self.

And then our boy realized that he, like Corduroy the bear, didn’t have a pocket. But Daddy did. A lesson about object permanence followed (little pizza delivery truck hot wheels disappears in pocket, and then reappears). Coulda played that game for hours. But alas, yawns, and it’s night time. Sleep tight my son. It has been a very good and long week.

Couldn’t pass up posting pics from yesterday’s water fun. As you can tell, Dutch thoroughly enjoyed being the master of the water (as displayed in the videos yesterday). Notice in picture two Mommy is inside the house, behind glass, as Dutch takes aim. (Daddy wasn’t as safe from the pure wetness.)
